Applicability of polyamide 12 intramedullary locked rods in the stabilization of induced humeral fracture in cockerels (white plymouth rock) - in vivo study Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Cherobini,E.P.; Carvalho,L.L.; Garcia,D.O.; Dias,F.G.G.; Malta,C.A.S.; Facin,A.C.; Mattos-Junior,E.; Magalhães,G.M.; Dias,L.G.G.G..
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of polyamide 12 intramedullary rods in osteotomized humerus in cockerels (White Plymouth Rock) and analyze, by radiography and histopathology, bone consolidation and the formation of bone callus. Ten cockerels were subjected to transverse osteotomy of the right humeral diaphysis followed by the insertion of polyamide 12 locked rods, with two nails in each bone fragment. Radiographies obtained at the immediate pre and post-operative period, and every 7 days for 3 months revealed no perioperatory complications. Radiography revealed a radiopaque bone callus between the 4th and 5th week post-surgery. Histopathology detected an amphophylic material (polyamide 12 rod) in the intramedullary region and the...

Dhal Recovery From Enzyme Pretreated Pigeon Pea Cultivar Gjp1 CIGR Journal
Dabhi, Mukesh N.; Sangani, V P; Rathod, P J.
GJP1 variety is newly developed variety of pigeon pea. It gives higher seed yield as compared to other varieties. Pigeon pea is mostly consumed in the form of splits hence, it is necessary to verify its hulling efficiency and utmost dhal recovery. Pre milling treatments are generally employed to loosen the seed coat to remove husk without losing any edible portion and better dhal recovery.  Xylanase, pectinase and cellulose enzymes were used to evaluate the milling properties of pigeon pea grains. Efforts were made to evaluate the effect of enzymatic parameters, i.e., enzyme concentration (20-50 mg/100g dry matter), incubation time (4-12 h), incubation temperature (35-55 oC) and tempering water pH (4.0-6.0) on hulling efficiency were optimized using...

Effect of milling process on functional properties of legumes Thai Agricultural
Nipat Limsangouan; Seiichiro Isobe.
This study demonstrated the effect of milling processing (screw crushing, hammer milling and jet milling) on functional properties, such as antioxidant capacity, total phenolic content and resistant starch content of three legumes (broad beans, black soybeans and green beans). The results showed that broad beans possessed the highest antioxidant capacity and resistant starch content. Black soybeans had the highest total phenolic content. Different milling processes changed the functional properties of samples (p<0.05) depending on the particle size of the flour and the volume of the flush air operation. The grinding process, producing a smaller particle size and lower volume of flush air had higher functional properties than the others processes....

Impact of Sugarcane Delivery Schedule on Product Value at Raw Sugar Factories AgEcon
Salassi, Michael E.; Garcia, Mercedes; Breaux, Janis B.; No, Sung Chul.
Conversion to combine harvesters has resulted in Louisiana sugarcane growers delivering a more perishable product to raw sugar factories. Dextran formation increases as the time between harvest and milling is extended. Milling of freshly cut sugarcane reduces the formation of dextran and associated economic losses. One approach available to factories to reduce dextran formation is to extend the harvested sugarcane delivery schedule to the mill. A simulation model was developed to evaluate alternative delivery schedules at raw sugar factories. Economic losses in product value associated with dextran formation were estimated and compared for various extended delivery schedules.

Impediments to Competitiveness of Small and Medium-Scale Maize Milling Enterprises in South Africa AgEcon
Orefi, Abu.
The maize milling industry is highly characterised by continuous growth in maize milling and retailing margins in real terms (Traub and Jayne, 2004) despite the benefits and opportunities brought about by the deregulation of the South African maize market in 1997. This may be indicative of the inability of small and medium-scale maize milling enterprises (SMSMMEs) to emerge and compete with large-scale maize millers. This paper examines the constraints faced by SMSMMEs in South Africa. Data were collected with the aid of a structured questionnaire. Millers were asked to identify the various challenges facing their enterprises. Some key constraints identified were; high transport costs, high maize prices, brand name establishment and government policies...

TARIFF ESCALATION: IMPACTS ON U.S. AND GLOBAL RICE TRADE AgEcon
Wailes, Eric J.; Durand-Morat, Alvaro; Hoffman, Linwood A.; Childs, Nathan W..
Tariff escalation is an important aspect of protection for domestic milling industries, particularly in Central America. The United States exports over 40 percent of its rice as paddy. This study uses a spatial equilibrium trade model to evaluate the impacts of tariff escalation on U.S. and global long grain paddy and milled rice trade. Tariffs are harmonized for paddy and milled rice at two levels: milled tariff rates and zero. The results indicate that tariff escalation distorts US rice trade in favor of paddy exports, reducing the demand for rice milling and associated value-added activities in the US.

อิทธิพลของการกลึงหินขัดขาวที่มีต่ออัตราการแตกหักของข้าว และการใช้พลังงานไฟฟ้าของเครื่องขัดขาวแบบทรงกระบอกตั้ง Thai Agricultural
Chanu Photiphitak; Chantarat Wutisatwongsakul; Apichart Artnaseaw.
Vertical abrasive whitener of the rice mill, capacity of 500 ton paddy rice per day, in the northeastern of Thailand was used to study influence of grinding abrasive surface stone on broken rice ratio and energy consumption in vertical abrasive whitener. The results showed that when abrasive surface stone was grinded, the surface structure of stone was smoother and broken rice ratio could be reduced from 30% to 26% as well as energy consumption of abrasive whitener could be reduced 6%.
